In 366, a monk (和尚) named Lezun passed by some mountains in Dunhuang, Gansu. Showering in the sun’s golden rays, Lezun “saw” a thousand Buddhas in the air. Inspired by this, Lezun started building grottoes (洞窟) along the cliffs (悬崖峭壁), according to Tang Dynasty (618-907) records. Later, worshippers (礼佛人) followed in his footsteps and continued his work for the next 1,000 years. This is how the world-famous Mogao Grottoes came into being.
The grottoes contain more than 2,000 sculptures (雕塑) and 45,000 square meters of murals (壁画) in 735 caves. The sculptures and murals show how ancient people farmed, ate, and even fought. They contain elements (元素) of Chinese, Central Asian and Indian cultures. About 60,000 ancient documents were discovered in one cave, teaching us even more about Buddhism (佛教) and the lives of ancient people.
However, since the mid-16th century, the grottoes have suffered from natural erosion (侵蚀) and human activity. In 1944, the Dunhuang Academy was established to protect and study the grottoes and their culture.
For example, the academy has protected the caves by planting trees. These trees have reduced the damage (损害) done by spring sandstorms by over 85 percent. The academy has also developed a monitoring system (监测系统) to keep an eye on the caves.
The academy has been digitally preserving (电子化保存) the grottoes’ paintings and sculptures since the 1990s. Over 200 of the 492 caves have been preserved in this way. Virtual (虚拟的) tours of the caves allow people to see these works of art online. Videos, cartoons, and interactive games are also used to give people a taste of Dunhuang culture.
Su Bomin, vice-president of the academy, called for this work to continue at this year’s National People’s Congress (全国人民代表大会). A national lab will be set up to further research the grottoes. A virtual reality tour system is planned to be launched around June.
“I hope that through our efforts, the world will learn more about Dunhuang,” Su said.
Did you know?
The Mogao Grottoes were added to UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage list in 1987.
The grottoes were opened to the public in 1979.
The tallest sculpture in the grottoes is 35.5 meters tall, while the smallest is only 2 cm.
Daughter of Dunhuang
Fan Jinshi, 83, is called the “Daughter of Dunhuang”. As the honorary (名誉的) president of the Dunhuang Academy, she has spent her whole life researching and protecting the Mogao Grottoes. She started working in Dunhuang after graduating from Peking University and has spent over 40 years there. She has made important achievements in protecting the frescos and fighting sandstorms. She has also promoted cooperation (合作) between the academy and overseas organizations.
